Hookah pipe tobacco - the affordable alternative

Smoking shisha tobacco is an expensive pleasure. The German 25 gram regulation adds tons of packaging waste and the handling of the small packs is also quite annoying for the end customer.

So it's no wonder that some manufacturers have been thinking about how they can offer a hookah tobacco alternative that saves money and gives consumers what they want: Cheap tobacco.

The manufacturers' solution in this case is "hookah pipe tobacco", which is also known as dry-base or 2-component hookah tobacco.

The approach is as simple as it is effective. You don't sell hookah tobacco in the conventional sense, you sell flavored "dry" pipe tobacco. The customer could smoke this in a standard pipe or he can also mix the tobacco with glycerine and receive a 200g portion of hookah tobacco at a lower price. › Hier findest du weitere Informationen

Making Shisha Tobacco from Pipe Tobacco - How Does It Work?

Depending on the manufacturer, the mixing ratios might vary slightly, but the principle remains the same.

  1. You buy a can of about 65g Dry Base/Pipe Tobacco.
  2. You add approximately 135g of glycerin.
  3. You thoroughly mix the tobacco.
  4. You give the mixed tobacco time to steep.

For the glycerin, you should ensure that it has a purity of at least 95%. There is specially taxed glycerin for this purpose. Using other types of glycerin for this purpose is illegal according to the legislator, even though it is theoretically possible.

Strictly speaking, the entire process of mixing without permission and outside a tax warehouse is illegal. Moreover, the produced Shisha tobacco must be taxed immediately after production.

After the glycerin has had time to soak into the fibers of the tobacco leaves, you get 200g of smokable Shisha tobacco, which costs about half of what you would pay for directly usable Shisha tobacco.

However, as the manufacturing process is illegal without official permission, we strongly advise against it. The responsibility and potential consequences of your actions are yours alone.

❗ Note: Mixing with 130g of taxed glycerin would result in 200g of water pipe tobacco. Production is only allowed with permission and in a tax warehouse, and must be taxed immediately.

FAQ: Shisha Pipe Tobacco

What type of tobacco is used for Shisha pipe tobacco?

expand_more

The majority of Dry Base tobacco varieties are based on Virginia tobacco. However, there are also a few Burley varieties.

What glycerin should I use for Shisha pipe tobacco?

expand_more

In principle, any glycerin works for mixing Shisha tobacco as long as it has a purity content of at least 95%. However, the law mandates that only taxed glycerin specifically for this purpose may be used.

Does the glycerin have to be taxed?

expand_more

Only taxed glycerin may be used for the production of Shisha tobacco, even though using non-taxed glycerin would theoretically work.

How do I mix Shisha pipe tobacco?

expand_more

Add about 135g of glycerin to approximately 65g of Dry Base. Then thoroughly mix the two components with a tobacco fork. After a resting period of at least 15 minutes, the tobacco is ready to smoke.

How long does the glycerin need to soak into the tobacco?

expand_more

Some tobacco manufacturers say that 15 minutes is enough for the tobacco to be ready to smoke. However, it is a fact that the full flavor of Shisha tobacco only develops when the glycerin has the opportunity to fully penetrate the tobacco's cell structure. Therefore, we recommend a waiting time of at least 48 hours before consumption.

Does the Shisha pipe tobacco taste like the ready-to-smoke variety?

expand_more

Honestly, not quite. There are many factors that influence the taste of a product. These include raw materials and production tools/conditions. Since both the flavors and the tobacco are the same, you can come quite close to the original, but you will not fully achieve the taste of the ready-to-smoke Shisha tobacco.
